I beleive the Sonerai definately looks better as a tail dragger. This is the original design.
My plan is to build as a tri-gear but then again I'm not sure if I want to loose those few knots in cruise. I havent flown a tail-dragger yet...the closest thing would have been a Blanik glider in my training of which I have a few hours.
Would there be any advantages to using tri-gear? ... just easier landings?
So weighing it up...
Tri-gear Pro
Easy to land
Tri-gear Con
Slower cruise
Tail Dragger Pro
Faster Cruise
Tail Dragger Cons
Harder to land
Let me know your opinion.
OK...so I've edited this article...looks like I'll be going with a tail-dragger... it looks better and goes a bit faster. I've been told I can handle it. So now I'll be going to get a tail dragger endorsement on my ultralight certificate.
Darin,
ReplyDeleteAs a reasonably accomplished tail dragger pilot/owner, I can confirm that the bottom line you have arrived at is 100% correct. Not only will you have a more efficient, more utilisable and better looking aircraft, you WILL become a better pilot in flying a tailwheel type.
Get your hands dirty by spending some time dragging a tail and you will quickly realise that it is absolutely no big deal to achieve!
Go do it!
